Global Cardinal Demographics Ahead of May 2025 Conclave
The College of Cardinals currently comprises 252 members, with 135 considered electors. These electors are the cardinals who were under the age of 80 at the time Pope Francis died on April 21. The conclave to elect a new pope is scheduled for May 7, 2025.
The cardinals are counted based on their place of ministry, although some reports note that counts might differ if based on their birthplace. A graphic from the USCCB highlights several key statistics. Of the 252 cardinals, 135 are electors and 117 are non-electors.
Breaking down the living cardinals by the pontificate during which they were created shows that during Pope John Paul II’s era there were 36 non-electors and 5 electors. Under Pope Francis, there are 41 non-electors and 108 electors. For those created by Pope Benedict XVI, there are 40 non-electors and 22 electors.
The electors represent 72 different countries. In the United States, there are 10 cardinal electors, and Italy has 16. In total, 55 countries are represented by one cardinal elector each. Furthermore, the continents of Asia and Europe each have electors from 18 countries in the conclave, while Africa is represented by electors from 17 countries.
Overall, the College of Cardinals represents cardinals from 95 countries. The oldest member is Cardinal Angelo Acerbi, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on September 23. The youngest member is Cardinal Mykola Bychok, the Eparchial Bishop of Saints Peter and Paul of Melbourne of the Ukrainians, who was born in February 1980.
